Fresh Roots Farm CSA

What is the purpose of a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Before the start of the season, members of the community buy shares of the farm’s produce. By doing so, they commit to the farm and share in the risks and rewards inherent in farming. In return, members receive a basket of fresh & diverse produce weekly.

Primarily, the CSA purpose is to grow a community center around the farm and support the continuation and return of local, small-scale agriculture. MEVO’s CSA functions to support our free and reduced educational program. The CSA price reflects a fair balance between the farmers’ needs to cover costs of production and pay living wages to themselves so that they can live in a dignified manner, and the members’ need for food that is accessible and affordable. You, as a member, share the risks and rewards of the farm season. When there is an abundance of a crop, you will receive extra produce. When there is an extreme act of nature, the farm will not be forced out of business or into a deficit thanks to your investment. In return for the risk of paying up front for a share, members are the first priority to receive the best our fields can offer.

Free Choice Style CSA

This year, we are changing the way we distribute our veggies to you. Instead of a pre-set list of veggies, we will give you free choice of 6-8 items each week based on the seasonal harvests from the field. There will be limits on certain crops when the harvest is light (Ex, only one salad bag per person), but this model will allow you to take exactly what you want and skip the crops you don’t desire.

As an example. If you don’t want radishes one week but want an extra bunch of herbs, that will be possible.

Each week, we will still send out an email the day of pickup with your veggie options, recipes, growers’ notes, and guidance on how many items can be taken that week. Staff members will be at the pickup site to help guide you as needed. We will continue to have a seconds table when the field provides.

Here are example lists of veggies you would be able to choose from each week for each season

Spring: Head Lettuces (2-3 heads), Arugula, Spring Mix, Tatsoi, Mustard Mix, Bok Choy (2-3 heads), Kale, Swiss Chard, Green Garlic, Scallions, Radishes, Salad Turnips, Carrots, Beets, and a variety of Herbs

Summer: Head Lettuces, Arugula, Spring Mix, Mustard Mix, Bok Choy, Head Lettuce, Kale, Swiss Chard, Scallions, Radishes, Salad Turnips, Carrots, Beets, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplants, Garlic, and a variety of Herbs.

Fall: Head Lettuces, Arugula, Spring Mix, Tatsoi, Mustard, Bok Choy, Head Lettuce, Kale, Swiss Chard, Scallions, Radishes, Salad Turnips, Carrots, Beets, Broccolini, Spinach, Garlic, and a variety of Herbs

Notes from the Growers

  • Produce types, quantities, and qualities vary throughout the season. For example, lettuces and radishes do not like summer heat, so they may be less frequent during those times. Similarly, eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers are abundant mid-summer-early fall, but you won’t see them until the end of July! You are eating with the seasons by participating in our share.

  • There will be NO pick up on 8/19. This coincides with our Farm Feast Fundraiser.

  • At certain times throughout the season, you may have more than you can eat. Please prepare to ferment, freeze, or dry some items for future use. Please do your best not to throw any of our items in the garbage, if something has gone bad...COMPOST IT!  No compost at home? Bring it back to us when you pick up your share & you can bring your unused veggies to our compost.

We take time off! There will be no pick-up on 8/19 as we prepare for our Farm Feast. Sometimes, we take off 1 more week during times of intense turnover for fall plantings. If this is the case, you will know 2 weeks or more in advance and we will set up a serve yourself farm-stand with paired down share options.

In the event that you are unable to pick up:

  1. Please call or text our Farm Manager Jacob at (845)-729-8700 or email jacob@mevo.org at least 1 day prior to the pick-up date if you cannot make the pickup. We will box and label your share in our fridge and give you instructions on how to find it. We cannot accept members who are unable to consistently make the pickup date and time.

  2. If you are arriving later than 5:50, please contact us via text or call ASAP. We are happy to set aside your share as we break down the stand.

In the event of an unplanned inability to pick up (no call/no show), we will donate your share to our interns, staff, and volunteers. But really…we’d rather your veggies go to you
