What’s it like to be a MEVO Intern?

“Nothing is more important than doing what you love. MEVO has reassured me that environmental work is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. From building trails with the NJNYTC to working on the MEVO Fresh Roots Farm, I learned that it is imperative that we continue to serve our planet. It is our lifeline and we must nurture it. The work MEVO is doing is now more important than ever, and I am so lucky that I got to play a role in its endeavors this summer.”

- Caroline, Summer Crew 2023

“I took away a greater appreciation for regenerative food systems. It was so rewarding to be a part of feeding the community while also benefitting the environment. I also realized how much thought and hard work goes into building low-impact trails.”

- Jenete, Summer Crew 2022

From the internship, I took away a new sense of knowledge and confidence when it comes to market and regenerative farming practices. I feel more capable of growing my food, caring for the natural landscape around me, and last but not least- how important it is to support local farmers.

- Meghan, Spring Crew 2023

“MEVO has allowed me to connect with my local community. We truly value the relationships we build with each other, and you can see that when we are in the fields, working with volunteers, or selling at the Ramsey Farmer’s Market. MEVO becomes your family.”

- Carly, Fall Crew 2022

Through teamwork and dedication, you can accomplish anything. I took away feelings of accomplishment and camaraderie that only come from completing hard labor-intensive tasks, and we were lucky to have an awesome crew.”

-Kate, Fall Crew 2022

“I could work with so many volunteers this fall, and I was able to improve my social skills. I also learned teamwork and strategy skills, and technical skills on the farm. I feel confident in the ability to share and practice some of the farming skills I gained at MEVO.”

-Kenny, Fall Crew 2022

“MEVO values the health and wellness of the community and works to support the people of the community by increasing access and availability of nutritious foods while participating in activities that improve the environment.”

- Faith, Summer Crew 2022

I learned how to pace myself, flexibility, and communication. Whether we were on the trials or at the farm, it was crucial to pace and take care of yourself to be productive in the heat (including some brutal 90+ degree days in the tomato rows). When you're on the trail and it decides to rain or a pest has unexpectedly taken over a crop, a days work can change dramatically. I am a serious planner and I had to learn to be flexible towards nature and the rest of the crew as well as patient in moments of uncertainty. Communication was essential to everything we did but its importance really shined when we were building a rock bridge at Ramapo County Reservation. We had some rocks that had to be moved by a grip hoist which is at least a three-person job and then three people with rock bars had to further maneuver the rock into place. During these moments, communication was crucial to working safely and efficiently.

- Carolyn, Summer Crew 2022

“The fall internship at MEVO was first and foremost a blast. Along with sharing time with some amazing people outside and in the dirt, I learned what it takes to make a farm function. It wasn't long before I forgot I was an intern and felt as though I was part of a family away from home. The work is strengthening and rewarding with guaranteed smiles along the way, through rain or shine. I’d recommend this to anyone and everyone, a truly heart and mind-opening experience.”

-Mark, Fall Crew 2020

“The MEVO internship I completed was amazing and one of the best decisions I've made. It was fun, educational, and made me feel proud of myself when looking back at how much I had learned in a few short months! All of those at MEVO are wonderful and inspirational people and I am so glad I got the opportunity to work with them and get to see what goes on at the farm.”

-William, Fall Crew 2020

“MEVO was awesome! Not only is MEVO coordinated by incredible people, but I made some great friends with other interns that I hope to carry with me through the rest of my life. From building trails to planting fruits and veggies, to hiking through beautiful Acadia National Park, MEVO provides plenty of opportunities to become connected with the environment and your local community while also bonding with potential life-long friends!”

— Robyn, Summer Crew 2019

“My experience with MEVO was my first internship ever, and it honestly changed my life. We went camping, we hiked a lot, we weeded a lot, we enjoyed meals together, and shared our dreams. Not only did I learn that I am capable of working hard, I learned that there are so many different routes to success and that working in an office isn’t the only way. Because of the people I met through the internship, I now look forward to having my own homestead one day after I explore the world & continue farming along the way. I am forever grateful for MEVO!”

— Patrick, Trail Crew Summer 2018

"I came into the MEVO Summer Intern program expecting to learn about farming but gained knowledge and experiences in so many areas. Every day was different, fun, and challenging, and gave me a chance to escape the routine of everyday life. The memories created with the tight-knit group of interns and the inspiration received from speakers truly fueled my passion for the environment and sustainability."

— Joelle, Farm Crew Summer 2018

The team at MEVO (including the four-legged ones!) introduced me to a new higher perspective on work; It is the hard work we put in that helps us grow as well as the plants! The team's knowledge seems to be boundless and their passion is contagious serving as fuel for my own journey. Thank you MEVO!”

— Cierra, Farm Crew Summer 2018

“If you are looking for a sign to apply for this internship, here it is! I can say with 100% certainty that doing this internship resulted in the best summer of my life.  It didn't come without its hardships, but I think it was such a life-changing experience because it challenged so many conceptions I had about myself beforehand. I found so much meaning in myself and the world around me during this internship. Days spent in the sun, learning about the Earth and how to plant food, long hikes through beautiful forests were only facets of what made this experience satisfying, amazing, and fulfilling to me.”

— Dominica, Farm Crew Summer 2017
