After the inaugural season at FRF, it became apparent that an on-site cooling system was essential to the harvesting process. An industrial fridge was out of the question due to its high price (up to $10,000), so instead we built a fridge out of a recycled motorcycle trailer cooled via a Cool Bot. A Cool Bot, invented by New Paltz Farmers Kate and Ron Khosla, is a small computer hooked up to an air conditioner that keeps the AC unit running at a refrigerator temperature (around 35-40 degrees F). A refrigerator gives us the luxury of harvesting when produce is at its peak, both nutritionally and aesthetically, and storing it until the day of CSA pickup or selling date. Additionally, it permits the farm crew to harvest during normal work hours and not early in the morning to avoid peak heat that would inevitably spoil the harvested produce.
